Second-year driver Jimmy Shane won San Diego Bayfair and the national championship on Sunday as the storybook career of Steve David came to an end.
David jumped the gun by a 1/30th of a second at the start of the final, which gave Shane an easy victory on Mission Bay. Shane smiled and hugged teammates as he celebrated his first national championship as an Unlimited hydroplane driver.
"I grew up watching Steve David drive and it's an honor to compete against him," Shane said. "But I also wanted to win that national championship for my team."
David announced before Bayfair that he was retiring after 24 years as an Unlimited hydroplane driver. The Oh Boy! Oberto driver was in fine form winning all three of his heats leading up to the final.
"It wasn't meant to be today," said David, who finished fourth because of the penalty. "I have many wonderful memories from the sport from the competition to the fans and my teammates. I'm ready for the next chapter."
